BIRTHROOM BASICS

Logo of Birthroom Basics featuring a red fingerprint and blue text.

Nicolette is the founder of Birthroom Basics, a light-hearted, honest and practical workshop created specifically for expectant couples.

After training as a Hypnobirthing practitioner in 2013, she recognised a disconnect between the teachings and the realities of a hospital labour ward. Wanting to offer something more aligned with real birth environments, she stepped away from Hypnobirthing and developed her own workshop. Unlike traditional midwife-led antenatal classes, Birthroom Basics is grounded in real-time, up-to-date labour ward experience—giving parents a clear, current picture of what actually happens in the birth room.

Nicolette’s aim is to instil calm, informed confidence in both parents as they prepare to meet their baby. She blends simple, accessible physiology with open conversations about what to expect - and how to handle the unexpected -as a team. She believes birth can be a beautiful, bonding experience when couples feel supported, prepared, and empowered.

The workshop is filled with laughter, straight talk, and genuinely useful tools to help parents step into birth with confidence.

Birth Coaching: Helping Couples Feel Calm, Confident, and Connected

Birthroom Basics (A Doula's Perspective)

Through her years of experience as a doula, Nicolette has found that couples who are well-informed and prepared approach birth with greater confidence and have more positive experiences than those who are unsure of what to expect.

4-hour Birth Preparation Workshop

This workshop is practical and realistic - a space where Nicolette shares the tips and insights she has gained over years of supporting hundreds of labouring couples as a doula.

Nicolette has worked with most caregivers and in most hospitals around Cape Town, enabling her to offer informed guidance and valuable insight to the couples she supports.

The Workshop Includes:

  • the physiology of birth, and how to work with the body rather than against it
  • where fear surrounding birth comes from and how to alleviate/manage it
  • extras to pack in the hospital bag
  • how to utilize the space at home and in the hospital a better birth experience
  • natural pain relief options
  • breathing techniques
  • positions for labour and birth
  • what the partner can do (and what they definitely should not do!)
  • ideal for VBAC’s or second time around as a “refresher”

This specialised training focuses on improving birth outcomes by guiding the posture and movement of labouring women, supported by a deeper understanding of pelvic anatomy and physiology. It teaches specific techniques and exercises that create more space in the pelvis during pregnancy and labour, emphasising the importance of maternal mobility and alignment. These tools help optimise the baby’s position, potentially facilitating a smoother, more efficient birth.

Nicolette believes that medical pain relief has an important place in the modern birth room. However, she is passionate about approaching pain management through a thoughtful hierarchy—starting with the most conservative, natural techniques and progressing to medical options as needed. She supports a flexible, mix-and-match approach, recognising that even within medical interventions there is an optimal order to follow.

Rather than relying on a predetermined plan based on an unknown future experience, Nicolette helps clients tailor their choices moment by moment. This approach reduces disappointment and unmet expectations, allowing parents to make informed decisions that truly support their birth experience.

Expectations

Expectations

While Nicolette believes birth preparation is essential, she also emphasises the importance of managing expectations—encouraging clients to focus on birth preferences rather than rigid birth plans. She continually reminds parents that advocacy isn’t about saying no; it’s about asking why, so they can make informed, confident decisions throughout their birth experience.
